Is Aquatic Therapy Right For Me?
Being in the water has many benefits for our body and mind. Water creates a low-impact environment that reduces stress on muscles and joints. In fact, when we are in water up to shoulder height we are only supporting about 10% of our body weight.
Further benefits of water-based exercise include the ability to increase strength and range of motion after an injury or surgery before it could be tolerated on land. Water also provides an opportunity to practice your balance with little to no risk of falling.
Water also has a much higher resistance than air, so you can still get an effective workout. Being in the pool can help your heart circulate blood more effectively because of the pressure created when you are immersed. You’ll even find your heart rate will even stay about 10-15 beats lower in the water than with the same effort on land because of the pressure.
Swimming can also be an excellent way to increase cardiovascular endurance again following surgery or injury if you are looking to get back into sports. Working with your physical therapist for a session in the pool to assess stroke technique is something we love to do with our clients. We can take what we know about your specific movement needs "on land" and recommend how to best move in the water.
Let your physical therapist know if you are interested in meeting at the pool for a treatment session!
