Why does Sea Pines Physical Therapy offer small group training?

As physical therapists, our main focus is on restoring clients back to what we call “Prior Level Of Function”, we even made it an acronym (PLOF). Impressive right? Well, this is a term that I both love and hate. I love that it can direct our rehabilitation journey, but I hate that it is rear facing. Additionally, oftentimes one’s PLOF (you got it) actually led them towards the injury we are treating, so restoring PLOF isn’t enough.

We want to go on the offensive by improving the health and performance of our clients while decreasing their risk of injury. Over the last two years, I have found small group training to be an extremely effective means to achieving both of these goals. We have completed multiple cohorts and seen significant improvement in our client’s strength, coordination, balance, and endurance. I like to geek out on the performance tests and measures that we complete over the course of the training program, but I will spare you the details. Instead, I want to tell you why I really enjoy offering these classes.

First, we train outside. Beyond just vitamin D intake, there are multiple health benefits to being and moving while outside. I really enjoy the fresh air, along with the sort of long-form that our specific workouts provide.

Second, we train together. Social interaction has been in short supply over the last few years, especially during the pandemic. Time-poor adults (speaking as a time-poor adult) rarely get the chance to do something healthy and challenging with other people. Put simply, it makes the effort fun.

Finally, we try new things. Without a conscious effort, we all tend to get into ruts with our exercise routine or way of moving. For example, people that love distance running may tend to shy away from strength work, and people that love weight lifting may neglect mobility or endurance training. We design our workouts to progressively address a wide range of movement skills and train multiple energy systems.

As a physical therapist, I’m happy to spend my time helping people navigate injuries, however, I am also excited about preventing injuries and improving performance in all dimensions of life. So that is why we offer small group training. Our next opportunity to train with us will be starting on March 2nd and is a great introduction to our training methods. Register here to reserve your spot in one of our groups. There is one that is right for you.
